The first winners at CHI Donaueschingen
The first winners at the 70th birthday edition of the International S. D. Fürst Joachim zu Fürstenberg Memorial Tournament Donaueschingen have been decided!
The first day of the tournament kicked off with the international CWD-Youngster Tour. Nabadu H, ridden by Maximilian Lill, won in the six-year-old showjumping category, while Harkana Vicart, ridden by Frenchman Emeric George, dominated in the seven-year-old category. Immediately following this was the Bad Dürrheimer Mineralbrunnen Prize, an international 1.40-meter showjumping competition. There were 58 starters from 14 nations, including newly crowned eventing Olympic champion Michael Jung, Olympic champion Jeroen Dubbeldam from the Netherlands, and the successful trio Richard Vogel, Sophie Hinners, and David Will.
However, the victory went to a rider from an emerging showjumping nation, Jordan. Nasouh Kayali triumphed on the Belgian mare Milona van het Speienhof, who completed the course faultlessly in 60.63 seconds. “My horse jumped great,” beamed the 33-year-old. “I had a starting position roughly in the middle and rode for the win – luckily, it worked out.” Second place went to the Swiss rider Agathe Vacher on Coltaire’s Rubin in 63.30 seconds. The best-placed German rider, Christoph Brüse, came in third. For the top two finishers, it was their first start in Donaueschingen; Brüse knows the tournament well and explains, “I competed here a few years ago and now again – thank God! It’s just a very beautiful tournament.” With the 13-year-old Cosima, Brüse completed the course in 63.83 seconds and was highly satisfied: “My mare jumped well; she’s set to compete in the big tour tomorrow – so far, everything is going according to plan.”
For the German Olympic rider Richard Vogel, this competition didn’t go optimally, but he remained cheerful and optimistic. Being a native of Baden-Württemberg, he frequently attended the tournament as a child to watch, and this year he is participating for the first time in CHI and feels very comfortable. “The large grass arena is really good, with very good footing.”
Helen in front of Helen in the new dressage arena
Simultaneously, competition for the B. Grimm Group Prize was held in the newly established dressage arena. In this international four-star Grand Prix, Helen Erbe and the 17-year-old Carlos FRH emerged victorious. Just a few weeks ago, the pair was part of the German gold team for the third consecutive time at the U25 European Championship. Now, in Donaueschingen, they competed for the third time in an international four-star long Grand Prix. Their score: 71.196 percent.
“The test was totally fun from start to finish,” said the 23-year-old cheerfully. “We had one or two little mistakes, but overall, I’m really pleased. He was focused but still full of energy.” Three years ago, Helen took over the Carabas son from her sister Hannah, and now Carlos is 17 and only competes in selected tournaments. “After the European Championship, I thought about which beautiful tournaments were still to come this year and Donaueschingen came to mind. Plus, Seb (Sebastian Heinze) will also be here from Friday, so he can watch after me.” For Helen Erbe, this is her first start in Donaueschingen; she finds the conditions excellent and the arenas well laid out. “The spectators are very close, which is not easy for the horses, but great for the audience.”
Another ‘Helen,’ Helen Langehanenberg, placed second. With Facilone, the team world champion scored 71.130 percent, with three out of five judges placing the pair first, but the combined score ultimately gave the victory to Erbe. Third place went to Reitmeisterin Dorothee Schneider on Dayman with 69.609 percent. “He was quite excited,” explained the two-time team Olympic champion, which led to a few uncertainties.
This international four-star Grand Prix was also the qualification for the Meggle Grand Prix Special, scheduled for Saturday morning.
The parade starts at 5:30 PM through the town of Donaueschingen,
according to Mayor Erik Pauly, 'the actual starting signal' for the tournament and a celebrated tradition of the event.
